Why is Durable Siding So Important?

There’s a good chance that when you’re looking to buy a new home, one of the last things on your mind is going to be the functionality of its siding. Mostly known its looks, siding actually plays a larger role than simply offering curbside appeal. Luckily, it’s not something that should make or break your purchase as it can easily be replaced. That’s why Ferguson Roofing is providing you with a few notes on why a home’s siding is important.

What is Siding?

Siding can be any material (except masonry) that covers the exterior of your home. Its main job is to protect the home from harsh weather conditions like wind, rain, and snow. Siding also works hard to keep the inside of your home at the same temperature your thermostat reads. Lastly, it can add beauty to a home through a wide range of colors.

Siding Offers Protection From the Elements

If you’ve ever witnessed home construction, then you know that there’s a lot of wood involved. At one time, this was all people really needed to shelter themselves from the elements. Their homes, however, weren’t making it through enough summer storms and winter blizzards as they would have liked. That’s why home experts came up with the idea of siding in the first place. A variety of materials ranging from more wood to aluminum were relied upon until the 1950s, when a new option made its way to market – vinyl.

Insulates Your Home

A lot of people tend to think of the same thing when they hear the word “insulation” – the pink fluff that goes between the walls or up in the attic. Fiberglass insulation does its job well enough, but it also has a little help. Before the hot or cold air from outside can even reach the fiberglass, it has to go through the siding first. Reversely, the siding gets some assistance from the fiberglass when hot or cold air tries to leave your home. Siding is only 100% efficient as long as there are no cracks or leaks; it’s important to keep an eye out for any damage.

Boosts Curbside Appeal

Unless a home is made from bricks or other stonework, all it takes is a close look to realize how much of it is covered in siding. This creates a unique opportunity for you to update the look of your home. Cream and white are classic colors when it comes to siding, but they are also very high maintenance. Power washers were also invented for a reason! Blue or pink aren’t incredibly common and maybe that’s what you’re going for. The point is that you get to make this decision when ready to replace the siding.

What Materials are Available at Ferguson Roofing?

Ferguson Roofing offers two kinds of siding – vinyl and LP Smartside. Vinyl siding has been around for over 70 years and still remains the most popular option in the U.S. today. It’s known for being affordable, easy to install, and available in many colors and styles. LP Smartside, on the other hand, is an engineered wood that is more durable, more resilient to moisture, and easier to install than fiber cement. It also comes in a variety of colors, thanks to a Diamond Kote™ finish.

LP Smartside is also available for trimming, paneling, soffit, and fascia.
