What is a Flat Roof?

What Materials Are Available?
Flat roofs have historically been covered with what is known as “built up”. This is layers of felt with melted asphalt mopped in between them. They work well but have some problems. The UV exposure will crack it with time and the weight of these systems can be problematic, particularly with snow and ice loads. They are also messy applications and not very environmentally friendly. Fortunately, technology has improved.
Modified Bitumen
One of the more popular materials used in roofing today is modified bitumen. This product is probably best visualized as a one-piece, rolled asphalt shingle. As it is rolled onto the roof, it allows for fewer seams and offers a surface that is better able to handle slow water shedding – water that takes longer to drain. It even comes in multiple colors to complement asphalt roof singles.
TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)
A combination of polyolefin, glass, and rubber, TPO is a single-ply roofing system. It can be as wide or thick as needed, minimizing seams and increasing resistance to puncture. TPO’s seams are heat welded to ensure their strength and endurance. Have an existing roof that’s just barely holding up? This material is an economic alternative because of its ability to be installed over that old structure. Overall with TPO, your roof will have a longer lifespan, require less maintenance, reduce heat transfer with its high reflectivity, and you could have a longer service warranty.
